W4W Poets Among Mark Niel’s Top 5

Word 4 Word (Newport News, Virginia, USA)

On holiday this year in the US, I was determined to seek out an opportunity to take the mic. This has been the first time I’d tried doing such a thing and I enjoyed the experience of making new friends through poetry. I was keen to see how my poetry would be greeted by an American audience; would the humour and cultural references translate and would the poems have the same impact? I have to thankAnn Shalaski, the audience and the poets for a taste of a US Open Mic night and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and their hospitality. This night was more reading than performed and I can’t thank them enough for their generosity, company and above all laughing in the right places! Word 4 Word completes my Top Five Poetry Experiences of the Year

We enjoyed you’re work as well, Mark. Thank you and please come back!

Mark Your Calendars & Tune In

Hello
Christmas is almost upon us and Radio Parkies will have two special (English Section) shows over the holiday period. Chad and Karl (our American DJs) will be doing the Christmas special on Thursday, 22 Dec 2011>/strong>.
Phil (Yorkshire lad) and myself (George) will be doing a New year special on Thursday, 29 Dec. It will include a Mastermind spoof with Phil asking difficult questions and me struggling to give the correct answers.

TONIGHT (8 Dec) I shall be sharing my show with our new DJ (Karl Hargrove) who lives in Oklahoma. He is age 38 and like all our DJs he has Parkinson’s. Married to a lady he calls “Ginger” with two children and a Computer. He will be playing some of his favourite music including C&W and Italian Opera. A man for all reasons we welcome Karl to our English Broadcast Section and I’m sure you will as well.
I shall be playing the 50/60.70s hits as is usual and maybe the odd surprise.
I’m on for the first hour followed by Karl for one hour. Show starts as usual at 8pm CET 7pm UK 1pm CST 11am Pacific time.
CET = Central European Time.
CST = Central Standard Time (USA).
Please listen to our show if you can and support us in our battle to make Radio Parkies the No 1 show by Parkinson’s people. We believe that we are the one and only in Europe and possibly the World and have a good chance of winning our battle!!
On behalf of us all at Radio Parkies I would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. May 2012 not only be good to you but also to Radio Parkies. We hope that 2012 will be as successful as 2011 and that we can go forward with the confidence that you are supporting us.

Jean-Paul Cremer is the man leading us and he deserves a special mention for all the hard work and hours he does. Without him and Geert Arien (RIP) there would be no Radio Parkies. Thanks JP.

George Hanks

PS. I would also like to wish one of our listeners (my friend Bart) a happy New Year and for him to get well soon.

Ten Thousand Villages Fair Trade Reading

In its fourth year, Ten Thousand Villages Fair Trade Reading invites you to respond in writing to art and crafts from around the world, bought directly from the artisans around the world who create them. Many of the artisans are underemployed. (They receive 50% cash advances when the orders for their work are placed.)

Please come and share your vision with others–this is how:

 1. Visit a Ten Thousand Villages store (the reading will be held in City Center) OR visit the store online at www.tenthousandvillages.com. Here’s a map and directions: Map
 2. Let me know you want to participate.
 3. Respond in writing to an artisan’s work. Read your poem to Ten Thousand Villages on June 12 at 3 p.m. for a reading OR send me your poem via email to share.
 4. If you would like, donate your poem to the Ten Thousand Villages Fair Trade Reading scrapbook kept in the front of the store.
 5. There will be drumming.
 6. And fair trade coffee.

Round Robin Poem

We Were

Angels, magicians and gods from another universe,
who sailed the blue seas and pearly white skies.
We were free to bask in the wonders of the world.
But God got bored with that reality.
What is reality?
He said to himself, and so brought forth the hours 9 to 5
where I please my appetite, but not my soul.
Is this quantum physics or is it rather phantom quinces?
When will we stop and find the truth?
But the truth keeps sinking deeper and deeper.
How deep do we go before we come back up?
Ah, there’s the rub . . . .
Peppered with questions that cannot be answered.
Answers that ears refuse to hear.
